Tithing…not a word you hear bantered around much anymore unless you live in Utah.
Simply, it refers to the very, very old medieval practice of giving one tenth of your income, or a tithe, to the local church. The church would then use the money to feed the poor, take care of abandoned babies, run the hospitals and just about anything else the community needed.
It’s a great word. Hard to know how to pronounce if you haven’t heard it before and too many people haven’t. Rhymes with writhe, as in “She writhed with indescribable pleasure as the handsome Knight roughly lifted her gossamer gown above…” Whew. I think you get it!
With the state of the economy these days it’s pretty hard to ask anyone to consider parting with one tenth of their income on a regular basis so no one’s gonna do that here. Like I said, we just like the word so we’re gonna use it. And if we can make tithing sexy, even better! Hee hee.
One of the goals of the Tara Team is to come up with ways to show women how to support other women and become part of a larger global network of girlfriends.

Kiva’s mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty. Kiva is a Swahili word meaning “agreement” or “unity.” Kiva is the world’s first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs in the developing world. The way Kiva works is like this: you decide how much money you would like to loan. You can choose any amount you are comfortable with. You pick out of a list of entrepreneurs who require the loan and that’s basically it. The person or persons you choose have a set amount of time to repay the loan and you can either cash out and get your money back or put it back into help someone else. It is another way of inspiring and empowering women of the world. And it just feels good!

Joel Nagtegaal and his friends had an idea that started with facial hair. In many parts of Canada, it is traditional for men to grow a beard, or goatee, while their favorite hockey team is in the playoffs. Working with The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC), Joel and company pledged $25 a win to purchase a goat for a family in need. If all went according to plan, there would be 16 goats bought by the time Vancouver was in possession of the Stanley Cup at the end of the post-season. The goats would be given to Third World African countries in need. Although the Canucks were eliminated prematurely people from 72 different countries still visited the Goat Canucks Goat website.
Even though hockey fan Joel Nagtegaal of Langley, BC, is sorely disappointed that a May 11 loss took the Vancouver Canucks out of the Stanley Cup playoffs, it’s not getting his goat. Or the more than 900 other goats donated to the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) so far since the playoffs. What started off as a friendly wager among roller-hockey friends to buy goats while growing playoff goatees has spiraled into a viral philanthropic phenomenon. Great role models!
Goat for Gold is another creation by Joel Nagtegaal and his friends! Help support this great cause by clicking on the link! Goats for Gold! When disasters or conflicts occur, families are often forced to flee, leaving everything. Sometimes they live in camps for years. Unfortunately, all too often the conflict or disaster that destroyed a family’s possessions also destroyed their livelihood. One of the most precious commodities can be livestock. Provide a goat to help a family resettle in their land; give them a head start in rebuilding their lives.
