Where Do Ideas Come From…

10355932-ideas-for-writers-and-artist-to-portray-ideas-and-motivation-written-on-a-closeup-of-an-old-typewrit IMG_0096_3_2Where does inspiration come from? Neil Gaiman pretty much sums it up for most creative types, I think. Inspiration for me comes when I allow my mind to float and be free of all outside stimulus. I can be sipping java in peace or standing in a line up with chatter filling the room. Our lives have become so busy the traditional sitting down at the keyboard waiting for inspiration to strike is no longer the writers way. I catch myself in the moment, like Neil says, and grab onto it and literally take notes or it’s lost! Once the idea is identified I run with it, literally, allowing my mind to get to a meditative state where I can let my imagination run wild.

I ran yesterday for the first time in 5 months, after breaking my foot. I felt like I was finally balanced internally and externally. I was advised to let running go, but I need it to purge the daily fragments from my mind making room for creative ones that stir up what sits deep below the surface of who I truly am.

What inspires me? Passionate people…feelings…the ocean…music and the desire to stir up emotions with words that when strung together make your heart sing!

Mommy’s Little Helpers…

If you consider yourself a well-seasoned Mom as I do, you have to give thanks to all the little things that help you get through the day. Life can be filled with uncertainty but if you arm yourself with ways to rouse your inner calm your day will end with a smile…trust me!

Now, if you’re a pill popper you need to listen up, there are better ways to take the edge off! I highly recommend all of them, with the exception of my daughter, she’s mine!

Today I give thanks to…

  • My Daughter was born a natural giver. She has a strong voice already! I have no doubt I will hear her roar many times along her path into Womanhood and help where she sees the opportunity! She doesn’t hesitate to jump in and lend a hand! She is heading towards being a strong, self-sufficient, independent young woman!

  • Malbec…my little Red full-bodied friend that has been known to take the edge off from time to time. I am not talking about putting on your wine-goggles with the girls, I mean a 6oz glass of la-la juice prescribed by Dr.Chaos! I don’t condone drinking by yourself EVERY night but they do say Red Wine is good for you…in more ways than one! I’m still not completely on board with this ‘drinking alone thing‘ but I’m willing to give it a try! 😉

  • Music is my favourite way to escaping the chaos that comes with being a Mom! Give my ears a sexy deep male voice strumming an acoustic guitar and I can tune out whatever you ask me to! Hell, a bomb could go off in the next room and I’d still be in bliss! Music soothes my soul and has helped me off the edge more than once! Sing to me Romeo!

  • Calgon Dish Soap ~’Calgon take me away’…ya no, didn’t work for me! False advertising for sure…and one more thing, the Mom who smiles and thinks it’s no big deal as the dog covered in mud runs through her kitchen leaving a frickin mess everywhere is on drugs just FYI! No Mom would stand for that unless she was!

~ insert deep breath here ~

  • Meditation however you choose to do it, a run, reading, traditional style, motorcycle ride, yoga or sitting in silence. Being peaceful is so important but hard to do as a Mom with a never-ending ‘to-do’ list floating around her head! Turn it off and just be. You deserve time!

  • Rescue Remedy“no really…it’s just flowers” says the hippy chick who wishes she lived in the 60’s where there was nothing but free love ~ (no seriously every Mom I know has a bottle in her purse) It works and comes in drops or spray…smooths the jagged edge of life restoring your inner calm! ssssquirt…ahhhhh…that’s better, shall we carry on!
  • Candles & Bubbles…add a Magnum of Vino Rosa and that naked sexy man with the deep voice whose strumming his guitar in your imagination and Voila…what kids? Life in the moment has arrived! You’re allowed to say to your offspring “don’t bother me unless you’re bleeding” in this situation!

So go crack that bottle of Red, take your imagination off stand-by and ask the man you sleep next to or the dude you wish you did to run you a hot steamy fragrant bubble bath, turn on some tunes, lock the door behind you and relax! You will be thankful you did!

What helps you get through the day?

What Makes You Feel Grounded

Bonnie Johnson's PostI think it is really important to ones well-being to feel grounded.  If you do not feel grounded then you feel out of balance, stressed, harried and scattered.

When I was in my twenties and early thirties I often felt like I was ungrounded.  Life just managed to pull me in too many directions at once.  My trick to get back to feeling grounded in those days was to go and stay with my grandparents for awhile.  They always lived in out of the way quiet places and their life style was slow and calm.  It felt so good to melt in with their pace for awhile.  Now that they are both gone I have had to come up with other ways to feel grounded.

I think being grounded means that our body and mind are integrated and to accomplish that it’s important to take yourself out of your own head a bit.  Most of us live too much in our heads and lose awareness of the rest.  I’ve discovered a whole bunch of different ways to feel grounded again and here are a few of my favourites:

1.  Notice nature.  Even little things like walking on the grass barefoot, studying a spider at work in its web, watching a robin pull a worm, playing with my dog, etc.

2.  Hanging out with my best friend.  Talking or not.  Just being with someone you know so well and trust completely can be very therapeutic.

3.  Cuddling with my husband.   Feeling love wrap around you…can it get any better than that?!

4.  Meditating.  Breathing deeply and focusing on nothingness.  Can’t feel scattered when you do that.

5.  Exercising to great music.  That’s why I love going to Zumba class so much.

How about you Jacquie and Tracy?  What makes you feel grounded?

post-insert-jacquie1

In high school I remember being introduced to basic psychological concepts having to do with maintaining mental equilibrium and what could happen it they were to suddenly disappear.  We all intuitively accept that when we go to sit on a chair it’s going to hold us up.  We have implicit trust in the structural integrity of that chair not to let us fall.  Sure, sometimes a leg does break and we take a tumble, but we can rationalize that it was old, or a joint gave way, and so we don’t lose faith that the next time we bend to sit that chair will hold firm again.  Can you imagine what life would be like if we couldn’t trust these basic tenets?  Frightening.  We’d be second guessing every step we’d want to take or every move we’d want to make and our nerves would be shot.

So,  faith and trust ground me when I feel I’m starting to float away and lose that gravitational pull.  Faith that the people I love know my heart and understand me, and trust that most people in my life really do have the best of intentions and are honest and intrinsically good.  If I didn’t believe this then it would be like living in a vacuum.

Being grounded is not a natural state for an artist, I think.  I’m always on the move, dreaming and scheming and planning and pushing, and this sometimes leads to feeling disappointed and adrift.  Setting up the easel and painting is good way for me to refocus, but it’s ultimately the conviction of my own thoughts that gets me back on track.   Whatever method you use to eliminate distractions it’s still your own head that makes the choice between calm and confusion.   The trick is to be honest with yourself, even if you can’t be with others.  Ask yourself the hard questions and expect hard answers.  It’s the only way to grow.

TracyGreat topic Bonnie, especially because after spending 10 days with you and John I felt just that.  It’s so important to stay grounded and finding ways to do that is the key.  For a free spirited Aquarian that can sometimes be difficult.

What makes me feel most grounded is when I spent time with close friends.  I always leave feeling grounded and centered once again.  Certain people in my life just seem to have a grounding effect on me.  Life can so easily get out of balance with how busy we make our lives, so you have to take time with those who bring you back to your roots.

My kids ground me daily and show me what is most important in life, which is living in the moment and just opening your eyes to what is right in front of you!

When I help someone I also feel a sense of grounding, it makes you realize that the little things in life that you do for others makes your life feel balance just a little bit more.  Meditation is also a great way to get reconnected to the earth.  My favorite form of meditation is running while listening to inspirational music.  After a good long run I feel like my slate has been cleared.

My Morning Pages

Typewritter
When you discover or rediscover what your passion is and immerse yourself in it sometimes it can take awhile to get your creative juices flowing freely again.

Tara Cronica is my passion.  Writing content to fill the pages is a process that I have been working on for months.  I wanted to share with you what is helping me get back in touch with my creative side.

My two partners Jacquie and Bonnie both suggested I read the book ‘the Artist’s Way’ by Julia Cameron, where she suggests you write what are called your morning pages. You are meant to sit uninterrupted and write three handwritten pages of what ever comes to mind.  Bonnie does this religiously and loves it.  I do it on occasion as well but I have another version of what also works for me.  I run while listening to music.  Music inspires me to write and running is my form of meditation.  I open my mind to any thought that might want to enter.  As soon as I set out on my run my attitude immediately changes and I feel empowered.  Running to me is my morning pages.  I get exercise, fresh air, meditate and some really great ideas to write about.  I haven’t solved the worlds problems yet but I am working on it.  Try it, I highly recommend it!
