What’s Happening Out There?

It seems more often than not when I watch the News I feel sad and wonder what’s happening out there? Beautiful young girls are being beaten to death in broad daylight, gang raped while others just standing by and watch, boys are bullied at school and forced to fight so some jackass can post the video on YouTube, there is political unrest around the world, and it seems innocent lives are being lost everywhere you look. Human beings are coming unglued. There are those who are creating negative behaviour and those who are reacting to it. The human race needs help and guidance desperately! Its craziness that is so disturbing at times it makes you wonder if its even safe to bring a child into this world! At times our future seems anything but bright, but I think we have to stay focused on the good that is all around us. If you look hard enough, it’s there, just hard to see some days!

When I sit and think about all the negative things going on in the world I think about what my part in all this is? Where do I fit in? What am I doing to create the change that is needed to stop the mayhem? There’s always hope, you can never give up or you lose before you even begin. Even one person can create enough change to make a difference!

When people visit Tara Cronica for the first time they often wonder what it is we’re selling. Its made me question why I’m doing this, more than once. What are we giving those who drop by for a visit? We sell our line of Jewelry and T-shirts, but the bulk of our site is our written word. What’s that worth? I use my voice because I feel passionate about sharing my life with others hoping to help in some way with theirs. I try to live by example of what you can achieve through perseverance and hard work. My hope when you leave Tara Cronica is that you don’t feel alone. There’s always someone out there who can relate. I hope to put a smile on your face, show you a different point of view and stir you somehow inside, which makes you use your voice in return. We are not just selling Jewelry and Tee’s, they have our message of Inspiration which I think is really important in the world today, you can’t put a price on Inspiration!

We created this space in the blogosphere to “Find Lyrical Beauty in Everyday Happenings” where we try to focus our attention on the upside of ‘everyday happenings’. We want you to leave inspired, so you can carry on your day and inspire others, and come back more grounded having creating positive change. We are trying to create a feeling, a warm sense of belonging, a safe place in a world that is trying desperately to change for the good. We are real women sharing real stories. We all have our own reasons for walking down this path, for me it just feels right. It’s a way of giving back, joining a social network to make my difference, as small as it may be.

I happen to think we are part of a very important movement which is picking up momentum as we speak! What’s happening in the world is not all negative, there is a lot of positive as well and that is what we are trying to share with you!

Thoughts become things….chose the good ones!

Happy Valentine’s Day…or not!

Valentine’s Day to the hopeless romantic is yet another day put aside to bathe in love. Subtle reminders are everywhere we look for weeks in advance. The anticipation of the day is overwhelming, giving us butterflies of what might transpire during the day. We will be showered with a gorgeous bouquet of fragrant flowers, hand written poetry, decedent chocolates, romantic candle lit dinner, and if we’re really lucky maybe a heart shaped pendent encrusted with diamonds!

If we live in a Harlequin Romance novel...(insert record scratching sound here) Hang on…reality check ~

Be honest, you’re annoyed by all the red heart decorations that got put up almost the same day the red Christmas ones came down. They’re just a reminder that you’re alone on a day meant for love. You don’t get flowers any other time of the year and now BECAUSE IT IS Valentine’s day and everyone looks at this day, not as a day to ‘express or find love’, but as a GINORMOUS marketing ploy to guilt your future love into buying you a 100 dollar bouquet of flowers that the day before cost 12 bucks, so there is no hope in hell of getting any today! (deep breath, ya I know a HUGE run on sentence) If you do get chocolates they’re picked up last minute at Shoppers and go straight to your butt and thighs, that you just got slimmed back down after bingeing on holiday squares and baileys coffee. Poetry? Does that include post it notes? Need I go on. That might very well be a HUGE exaggeration meant sarcastically to paint a clear picture of the two opposing sides of belief in dear cupid! There are those who believe in the chubby little cherub and those who just ignore the stabbing pain when they get hit by his cute little arrow! Believers (that’s me) love even the thought of him, non believers swat at him like a mosquito when he nears.

Real romance isn’t a $7.00 Hallmark Card, or any of the material things I listed above, it’s having your handsome beyond belief male energy look deep into your melting eyes as he tells you he can’t live without you…sigh. I’m holding my breathe for just that!

I am poking fun today because Valentine’s Day is my birthday and so many people seem to have lost the point of it. Some boycott it even. I happen to love it because I love romance! So much in fact I created our ‘Heart Inspired Halo Pendant‘ on our Treasures Page! I am a hopeless romantic and really do believe in love, love at first sight, love beyond marriage, romantic love, any way you put it! If it involves love I’m in!

So handsome, don’t follow the masses and marketers, make Valentine’s Day your own! ‘I love you’ shouldn’t be thrown around so loosely, if you are in love, tell her so. Today isn’t the day a dutch oven will go over very well, it’s a little more special for some of us. I am hoping that cupid doesn’t fall into the same category as Santa and the Tooth Fairy! If just one fairy tale creature could be real, this is the one I’d pick.

OMG! Gasp! Someone please tell me this picture was photo-shopped!

Guys you might have to hand in your ‘man card‘ for this movie, but if you do I bet there’s a huge payoff! Take a look at the list of chicks in this flick and you might actually go willingly! It’s definitely on my list to see. The Cast is amazing ~ Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, Jessica Biel, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Patrick Dempsey…win win!

Happy Valentine’s Day, I will now go eat some ‘snowball’ cupcakes from Big City Cupcakes that will hopefully send me into a sugar induced coma where my romantic fantasies all lay waiting. I hope I made you smile and think of love as it should be, real and raw and as simple as a few small meaningful words meant from the heart!

PS ~ Thanks Mom and Dad for sharing your love with one another so I was born on such a romantic day! You are my inspiration for true love!

Valentine’s Day the movie ~

Today would be a GREAT day for Canada to win a Gold Metal !! Go Canada Go!

Going Back to School ~

Okay Girls, we’re going back to school for a semester, what are you signing up for?

TracyTracy signs up for~

I have been spending time with my friend Kelsey who has completed her 3rd year in Human Kinetics.  Kels puts every ounce of her being into her studies, which is reflected in her marks.  Each time we talk I hear the wealth of knowledge she has acquired.  She is a young woman who has found what interests her, and can do anything she wants to.  There is no doubt that Kelsey will be the BEST at what she does when she completes her studies.  I wish I had been as focused as Kelsey when I was her age.

Kelsey has inspired me to think about what I would take if I was to re-enter school.  I know when it comes to school the opportunity is always there, it’s just how badly you want it.  I would take a real mixture of classes, some that would lend themselves to what I am doing right now, others that I just find interesting.

Creative Writing~ I am passionate when it comes to writing.  My Dad, Robert Westerholm, is a writer.  I really love how visual and descriptive his writing style is.  I can appreciate his passion for words when reading what he puts to paper.  Check out his website Caterwauls to get a taste of his style.  I have a love for words in general.  There are so many different writing courses that interest me, but I think I would like to try my hand at  romance.  My Dad has written one of the most  psychological  love stories I’ve read Acts of Empathy.  Inspiration is everywhere!

Silver-smithing~ I would love to learn how to work with silver to create unique treasures.  I used to make jewelry and love the creative process.

Spanish~ Si Aún me siento un vacío cuando se trata de aprender esta lengua y considera necesario seguir adelante con él, así que un día cuando me conecto los puntos veo por qué soy tan apasionado sobre el aprendizaje de ella.

(Yes I am still feeling a void when it comes to learning this language and feel it necessary to keep going with it, so that one day when I connect the dots I see why I am so passionate about learning it.)

Introduction to Theology~ Theology describes the study, writing, research, or speaking on the nature of gods, especially in relation to human experience.  Typically the concept includes the premise that such study is done in a rational, philosophical manner and can also refer to specific schools of thought – for example, progressive theology, feminist theology or liberation theology.  I love the conversations that lead to what we believe in and why.

So goddesses what would you sign up for if you could pick anything at all !!

jacquieJacquie~

I went back to school to work on a degree when I was 25 and at that time I thought I was old!  The most inspiring person to me was a new art history professor who, at age 61, had just completed her studies and was teaching for the first time in her life.  She was slightly awkward and uncomfortable but you could tell she loved the subject and that she knew what she was talking about.  I remember thinking how cool it was that she wasn’t letting age get in her way and, at a time when most people are thinking about retiring, she was just starting out.  Every time I begin to think I’m too old to start something new I think of her and push forward.

I recently read a very interesting article in the New York Times about the increase in enrollment at community colleges in America and how people eager to upgrade skills, or change to more financially rewarding careers, are willing to take night classes at unprecedented hours.  To accommodate all the new students, colleges have started offering courses starting at 6 am or night school classes that begin at 11:45 and don’t end until 2:30 in the morning!  I can’t imagine putting in a full day at work and then heading off to school until the wee hours of the night, but I applaud those who are doing it and wish them much success and fulfillment.  I always threatened my kids that when they were ready to go off to college I’d register for classes myself and be able to hang with them at the cafeteria and out in the Quadrangle.  I did take a few more art classes when Emilie started university and thoroughly loved it.  I’m looking forward to being a senior citizen as I believe we can then audit classes for free.  I’m going to go confirm that and report back as I’d hate to give false information.   OK, found it.  Check out Yahoo! Answers for the scoop.   If you’re willing to take classes without getting credit for them them you can do the audit thing.  I’d just want the learnin’ part so I’ll do it when I’m 65, for sure.

Bonnie Johnson's PostBonnie studies~

When I think about the idea of  “going back to school” I know deep down that I just like to fantasize about the learning.  I don’t really want to go to a college/university and sit in a class or lecture hall with a bunch of students half my age…but I do love the idea of learning new things constantly.   Sometimes I wish that all classes were open to everyone and anyone and I could just drop in on some classes and learn something new and interesting, but then leave if it started to bore me.  Without being in trouble or needing a note.  Yes, I admit, I’d like to flit from subject to subject, learning all the while but not being tied down to any one topic.  I’m sure this speaks volumes about who I am.  Perhaps if I’d studied psychology I’d be able to tell you.  I get bored and distracted quite easily.  Learn, learn, learn, NEXT!  And then there are the tests that come with going to school.  I hate tests.  I panic during tests and when I panic my mind shuts down, my memory disappears and I don’t see clearly.  Not a good attribute for a student.

My son is working on his business and entrepreneurial degree.  I’m very proud at how hard he works toward his goal.  I love hearing about the courses he is taking and I’ve often thought I’d love to take some of those classes too.  I doubt these courses would have interested me when I was younger but now that I’m *cough* older I realize the value in the business knowledge he’s acquiring and I’d love to be able to use it myself in business.   I think he gets flashes of that truth now and again too, but for the most part he’s just trying to get through it.  Right now he still has the stress of getting good grades, working to afford it all, and maintaining a busy social life as well.  If I were to go back to school now at this stage of my life it would only be for the joy of learning.  The grades wouldn’t matter, I wouldn’t have to worry about affording it, and as for a social life…let’s just say going to bed early every night would not be a problem for me.
